Drawing the Line: keeping your mind fresh.

I've been having this problem lately. I've been working in The graphic design business for about 3 years doing lots of mundane work. Quick newspaper ads, business cards, stationery, restaurant menus, nothing that has actually stimulated my creative mind and kept it running. for a while it was just so blah and bored out of my mind and I i felt like i just didn't have any creativity left.

I recently started drawing again. I pretty much stopped all drawing in college because i was so overwhelmed with the projects i was working at hand and then after i graduated and go into the working world, the time i had free was spent doing mindless things like playing video games or just watching tv. While working part time for some time now, i feel really rejuvenated. I've spent a lot of my extra time, creating pieces of art, getting back into drawing, My style has changed a lot since i last drew, but i think it has taken a turn for the best. I've started working more directly with pen and ink as well as regular pens and then switched up to coloring with watercolor. For a long time I had never really colored anything in my sketchbooks, just doodles with pencil, so it's a big changed of pace.

The one thing I'm now having a hard time with is getting my mind back into designing and creating on a new level. Being stuck doing mindless ads and print work has taken a toll on me and i just having a hard time moving past it. I want to create new and innovative pieces but struggle to keep myself doing it. I read a lot of design blogs and feel inspired by the stuff i see but i just have a hard time getting into the swing of things like designing posters, logos and stuff just for fun and possible portfolio work. It's something i have been battling for months and i just hope that i can break free of the designers block and get back into designing for fun...

Does anyone else have any ways they deal with this sort of thing??

Sad Yoyoing Clown

Pen and ink sketch from my black book. Did this while I was in Florida for the World Yoyo contest. I was trying my friend some of the cool lines and such you could get from just using ink instead of having an array of pens. unfortunately the Higgins ink I was using some how ended up getting deluded down so some of my lines were more of a grey then a nice black.... also i spilled a couple drops of ink...

Servbot Love

Can't believe i haven't posted this painting yet, it's been done for so long and its really one of my favorites!
I love the servbots! if you don't know, they appear in megman legends and marvel vs capcom. they are awesome and very under-appreciated.

Painting is on 11x14 stretched canvas with mixed media.
I always have a bit of fun with these.

This one is actually up for sale: http://www.etsy.com/listing/61700294/servbot-love

Mr. Picklesworth

This is Mr. Picklesworth. His mustache shows just how dignified he is.

This was just to show off an idea I had while looking at a piece my friend did. I misinterpreted what i thought to be a cardboard frame, which ended up just being a frame bought from a thrift store and repainted. I'm working on a series of frames created from cardboard. this however is just a rough idea but i want to create some detailed and in-depth looking frames that possible represent victorian designs with just corrugated cardboard. We'll see how well this project turns out.
Watercolors, Brush Pens, cardboard border.

This past weekend, I ended up selling this awesome piece to some one while at 1st friday in Philadelphia. I was both happy and sad. I had this up on my wall for about a month and took it down friday to just see peoples reactions to it... i didn't think i'd end up actually selling him off to someone. But then again, i'm happy he's going to a good home as someones present.

Tools of the Trade.

I've been Trying to put this photo together for a while. I have a lot of different pens and such that I've been using and different mediums I have been experimenting with lately, but i've wanted to showcase what I've been using as of late. It gives you a good idea of just what i have laying around on my drafting table as well as the cluttery mess that table can be. I feel like I should tone back from some of the stuff I use.

Sad Clown Series: number 3 rough

This is a work in progress. I'm still messing around with pen and ink and always enjoy how the lines come out when using this  medium. I'm trying to think of how I would like to color this. It's mostly between watercolor and pastels. Even thinking about leaving this black and white since it looks so good already.
size is 11x17 and is based off of a couple sketches i did in my sketchbook and moleskin
(I have a mini moleskin that i'm just filling up with clowns).
hope you guys like this!

I will also be in Philadelphia this friday for first friday events as usual, selling off some more awesome pokemon art and such. That is if it doesn't rain all day.
