Century Machines

A close friend approached my girlfriend and I to do a cd sleeve for his band's new demo cd. I originally didn't know anything about this until 2 days before he needed these done but, he was looking for something handmade and a little different from just putting the CD into a plastic case or cardboard sleeve and making some quick cover work. Christine created these amazing sleeves with a nice cut at the bottom for the cd to go in.
I had not known much about what they were looking to do until the day before these showed up on my table and ready to be painted. Because it was last minute, Mike, my friend in the band, gave me a lot of freedom to come up with something that would be a quick stencil. I definitely didn't have time to create any multi layered stencils with only 2 days to create this on my free time.  All he really told me was make something that looks organic and goes a bit with the song "Wild Wind." This is what I came up with:

The Stencil, being cut down.
All of them had to be stenciled...
Filling in.
Me working hard on painting.
Drying on my floor.
Finished Product.
The pile of finished sleeves.
The used and abused stencil.

All in all, I think this turned out to be a success and they were pleased with the finished product and are thinking about turning this into a series so I'll be able to come up with some more and possibly better ideas for stencil pieces.

clown series number 4

Another work in progress. I need to clean out the pencils and stuff but i think this one will be the best one yet. It's more realistic looking then the pervious ones i have done but i really liked the expression on this one.

Drawing the Line: keeping your mind fresh.

I've been having this problem lately. I've been working in The graphic design business for about 3 years doing lots of mundane work. Quick newspaper ads, business cards, stationery, restaurant menus, nothing that has actually stimulated my creative mind and kept it running. for a while it was just so blah and bored out of my mind and I i felt like i just didn't have any creativity left.

I recently started drawing again. I pretty much stopped all drawing in college because i was so overwhelmed with the projects i was working at hand and then after i graduated and go into the working world, the time i had free was spent doing mindless things like playing video games or just watching tv. While working part time for some time now, i feel really rejuvenated. I've spent a lot of my extra time, creating pieces of art, getting back into drawing, My style has changed a lot since i last drew, but i think it has taken a turn for the best. I've started working more directly with pen and ink as well as regular pens and then switched up to coloring with watercolor. For a long time I had never really colored anything in my sketchbooks, just doodles with pencil, so it's a big changed of pace.

The one thing I'm now having a hard time with is getting my mind back into designing and creating on a new level. Being stuck doing mindless ads and print work has taken a toll on me and i just having a hard time moving past it. I want to create new and innovative pieces but struggle to keep myself doing it. I read a lot of design blogs and feel inspired by the stuff i see but i just have a hard time getting into the swing of things like designing posters, logos and stuff just for fun and possible portfolio work. It's something i have been battling for months and i just hope that i can break free of the designers block and get back into designing for fun...

Does anyone else have any ways they deal with this sort of thing??

Sad Yoyoing Clown

Pen and ink sketch from my black book. Did this while I was in Florida for the World Yoyo contest. I was trying my friend some of the cool lines and such you could get from just using ink instead of having an array of pens. unfortunately the Higgins ink I was using some how ended up getting deluded down so some of my lines were more of a grey then a nice black.... also i spilled a couple drops of ink...

Here's a video from that weekend taken by Takeshi Kamisato.

good stuff from a good weekend.

Servbot Love

Can't believe i haven't posted this painting yet, it's been done for so long and its really one of my favorites!
I love the servbots! if you don't know, they appear in megman legends and marvel vs capcom. they are awesome and very under-appreciated.

Painting is on 11x14 stretched canvas with mixed media.
I always have a bit of fun with these.

This one is actually up for sale: http://www.etsy.com/listing/61700294/servbot-love

Mr. Picklesworth

This is Mr. Picklesworth. His mustache shows just how dignified he is.

This was just to show off an idea I had while looking at a piece my friend did. I misinterpreted what i thought to be a cardboard frame, which ended up just being a frame bought from a thrift store and repainted. I'm working on a series of frames created from cardboard. this however is just a rough idea but i want to create some detailed and in-depth looking frames that possible represent victorian designs with just corrugated cardboard. We'll see how well this project turns out.
Watercolors, Brush Pens, cardboard border.

This past weekend, I ended up selling this awesome piece to some one while at 1st friday in Philadelphia. I was both happy and sad. I had this up on my wall for about a month and took it down friday to just see peoples reactions to it... i didn't think i'd end up actually selling him off to someone. But then again, i'm happy he's going to a good home as someones present.

Tools of the Trade.

I've been Trying to put this photo together for a while. I have a lot of different pens and such that I've been using and different mediums I have been experimenting with lately, but i've wanted to showcase what I've been using as of late. It gives you a good idea of just what i have laying around on my drafting table as well as the cluttery mess that table can be. I feel like I should tone back from some of the stuff I use.

Sad Clown Series: number 3 rough

This is a work in progress. I'm still messing around with pen and ink and always enjoy how the lines come out when using this  medium. I'm trying to think of how I would like to color this. It's mostly between watercolor and pastels. Even thinking about leaving this black and white since it looks so good already.
size is 11x17 and is based off of a couple sketches i did in my sketchbook and moleskin
(I have a mini moleskin that i'm just filling up with clowns).
hope you guys like this!

I will also be in Philadelphia this friday for first friday events as usual, selling off some more awesome pokemon art and such. That is if it doesn't rain all day.

Owl in Love

This is based off of the Original Owl pen and ink i did a couple weeks back, My girlfriend really like the way it looked and her birthday was coming up so I decided to do a cute watercolor and ink drawing on a piece of bristol board i had laying around. Here is the end result. This piece has been completed for weeks though i'm posting it up so late because I wanted it to be a surprise for her. I feel like the background didn't turn out the way i'd have liked it but overall i'm still excited about how it turned out.

Influence Map

I've recently started a Deviant Art Page and noticed alot of people were posting these influence maps with things that influence and inspire them. I felt I should try this out for myself  to show what influences me as well as try to gather my own thoughts of thing that influence me. Though i did find this to be a challenge mostly because I gather a lot of influences from different things ranging from art to music to cars to movies and other things. This map is a generalization for things that i feel have been big influences on me over the last couple years in my art and design. See if you can name all of them. (please enlarge for full quality)

Newest in the Pokemon series

this is probably the last of the pokemon stencil series i'm probably going to do for a while. It's starting to feel like i'm beating a dead horse with all of the pokemon i have done this year. I'll probably make a couple more of these ones to sell but, going to lay off and focus on my watercoloring projects and pen and ink stuff. Enjoy the Jigglypuff. This one went to Andrea, my friend's wife, who has been asking for this for over a year. I finally sat down and worked on this about a week before her birthday. She was very excited when she got this and pretty much found a spot in their living room and hung it up right away.  Always happy with my art finds a good home.

Sad Clowns

WARNING!!!! If you dislike clowns, don't read or look any further!

Okay now that we have that out of the way, I've been in this crazy Sad/angry clowns kick for like 2 months. Something about drawing someone sad that is supposed to be happy intrigues me.

This was originally just a sketch on a piece of 11x17 copy paper, but I ended up pulling out the pen and ink and playing around with it and trying to make myself better at inking. Happy with the outcome, I decided you test out oil pastels. I have never used oil pastels, just chalk pastels, which i have to say has some major difference. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome of it and I'm glad i didn't give up on this piece.

Nike Dunks

I have a Thing for sneakers. Love sneakers! Actually have a pretty nice stash of them going on in the corner of my bed room.

thats actually from last year and i haven't updated it.. there is about 5 more pairs to that pile, most of them are all still in boxes.
But anyway, this post is about Nike Dunks. They are classics and i felt they needed some quality art inspired by them so I did this 11x14 painting of them yesterday.

I think it turned out pretty well and I'm thinking about doing some other color schemes as well. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Maybe I can get some of these up on Etsy.

first friday

Jeez, I need to get in the groove of posting again. I attended First friday in Philadelphia again, with Christine, my loving girlfriend. She runs a cute blog over at http://ckscribbles.blogspot.com. Though we didn't sell much, we still had a good time and met some awesome people. I think it was mostly because of July 4th weekend and everyone was at the beach.

I always have blast and always enjoy feedback from what other people would like to see (pokémon-wise) and what they think of the style in general. I also enjoy when people are confused by the pokémon and the servbots... seems like a lot of people don't play video games haha. I seem to get "I like those robots" or "lego men" all the time. PLAY SOME MEGAMAN LEGENDS AND MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2! These are some classics.

Then i thought to myself... I should do other videogames and animes that no one plays to it's even more obscure. Then my target audience would be even smaller, probably not the best idea...

Oh well. Speaking of needing to update things, i need to update my etsy account and put some new paintings up (and take one off because i sold it at 1st friday). so much work to do...

Friday again?!

going to be back in Philadelphia for First Friday to show off some paintings, maybe even sell a few again. I got a good response last time, you can tell who the video game nerds are but the quick glances at the mudkip and hearing people mutter under their breath "I heard like mudkips." Always puts a smile on my face.

I got a bunch more paintings painted up. Most are more Pokemon and a couple of servbots. I have a list of pokémon in my head just waiting to be made into stencils or maybe just painted up. Though i love the hole "pop art" look of my current work, i think i wanna try and make some silly hand painted pokés.

I have had this feeling lately that I don't have enough time and canvases to create all the ideas in my head... I also blame video games for not having enough time for art, but thats just bad excuses and me not being good with time management. WORK WORK WORK PAINT PAINT PAINT!!

PIKKKKkKKAAAAA!!!!

Got another painting up on etsy and it's everyone's favorite little rat! PIKACHU! this one if a bit different from the previous mudkip I have made, the pikachu stencil called for some different colors so i ended up using spray paint and acrylics together to get exactly what I was looking for! The end result is this awesome 11x14 painting.

see the full canvas at my etsy site

I've got a snorlax too but they sold out before I could get them up on etsy. First Friday was awesome and I just the reaction I was looking for, i feel like i should have came with more servebots and pokemon really... oh wait, you guys don't know about the servebots yet.... that will just have to be another post...

Some experimenting...

Been working on some ideas for painting a more collage style so I started trying to create some stuff in Photoshop for the idea I wanna go for. I always have so much fun doing this kinda stuff. I just want to keep adding and adding more stuff to it but I know I should stop haha. Here's a sample of what I've been messing around with.

Hopefully tomorrow will be nice in Philadelpha for First Friday. I'll be down there in Old City hanging out with some new paintings, so come check it out!!

BIDOOF!!!

So I have a friend that has beren begging me to do another Pokemon painting for him for his birthday. he wants a damn flygon... seriously... a Flygon.

I don't know if anyone has noticed but that's kinda out of my style, just not like "cutesy" enough for me. So I told him i would make Him a Bidoof. seems more fitting if you asked me. The weird Pokemon right next to say a Wobbuffet or a Wooper.
On one of the days I was working on some quick watercolors sketches in my book, he brought up the subject matter again, so I ended up painting a Bidoof and I figured I'd share it right you.

First Friday June!

Yeah that's right! I'll be attending the First Friday Extravaganza in Philadelphia next week. Well hopefully. I just hope it's a nice day! I've got some good paintings to sell off. Some are still for sale on Etsy but i'll be bringing them with me to Philly to see if they sell there. I've got some paintings to show off on here but they will have to wait till after this weekend, mostly due to 2 of them being my friends paintings for this birthdays and i don't want to show them off until they get to see them completed.

I feel like I should change the name of my blog to my name but still feeling undecided. SpawnoftheED is always just a place holder and the name I use for things such as screen names, and such But it doesn't seem right for a blog for art (soon to be Design)

Speaking of Design. In the Process of creating a new site layout. Sean Kennedy at seriouslysean.com wants me to create the hole thing for wordpress not sure how well that will work for a portfolio site but we'll see.
Currently my site Got Edgy dot com is looking a bit old and needs some shaping up. Plus I need to get better at my Web Design skills.

PS. I still owe the internet a water colored bidoof ;)

Saturday, May 1, 2010

Oops I did it again!

Yeah that's right! I Herd you liek Mudkips is back for a round 2. Back up on Etsy is the new Mudkip! This time in a nice purple and and pink! so bright!

Trying to get more of these ready since it seems like a lot of people are digging them.
need to work on my next Pokemon stencil... Bidoof!!

Katamari!!! NAAAA NANANA NANA

Hate to be that person that just gloats about new posts only about what they got for sale but, I got this crazy awesome Painting that I did of a Katamari Ball.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/45196541/katamari-drips

for those who don't know, Katamari or Katamari Damacy is a game from Japan made by Namco that is totally full of Drug induced images and game play. the concept of the game is to pretty much roll things up starting with small objects and slowly getting bigger and bigger to pick up bigger and crazier objects, kinda like a snowball effect.
i mean just look at that crazy intro!!

and justcheck out that gameplay

Needless to say, it's probably, the most fun I have ever had in a game and I find myself going back to it over and over again just to roll things up into a giant ball. Makes me giddily and puts a smile on my face every time!

If you own a ps2, ps3, psp, or an xbox 360, pick up a copy of one their many games. they are so addicting and entertaining!

Solved

I have a love for making stencils. They can be so relaxing to sit and cut out.
i really like the simplicity of the Rubik's cube and thought it would make an awesome stencil. And it is!

I never got the knack doing those Rubik's cubes. I've tried everything!!!. for this painting I decided I wanted those sides to be solved so they didn't irk me anymore!.

I've added it to etsy

http://www.etsy.com/listing/45072596/rubiks-solved

Loved the colors, they just kind of flowed on to it perfectly. I made sure that the color scheme matched the original that I have so it didn't look to crazy... though it would look awesome if I Warhal'd it.

Sold!!!

Wow! After only being listed for 2 days, I had my mudkip painting sold! i'm so hype! I'm definitely going to need to post some more stuff up on etsy shortly.... and post some more artsy stuff on here too.

I've been trying to Concentrate on drawing and sketching ideas and stuff again, but Call of Duty just keeps grabbing a hold on me. hopefully this weekend after my sweet bike ride, i'll feel inspired to get back to pen and paper and just doodle, maybe even start a new painting. Also need to paint another mudkip because the interwebs is in love with them.
I'm out for now though.
